What Business Owners Should Track When Measuring SEO Performance

Business owners should track organic traffic, keyword rankings, conversions, and Core Web Vitals. These SEO metrics connect your search performance to tangible business outcomes like leads and revenue.

Here at Matter Solutions, we’ve helped businesses grow through SEO and digital marketing for over 25 years. So we know which numbers deserve your attention, and which ones waste your time.

Unfortunately,  we’ve seen many SEO reports focus on one metric alone (like keyword positions). And while a boost in rankings feels great, it won’t tell you if visitors are actually contacting you or leaving your site straight away.

A more useful approach is to track a small group of meaningful SEO metrics that tie your search visibility and organic search traffic to your business outcomes. In this article, we’ll cover the SEO metrics, tools, and reporting habits that’ll help you measure SEO performance and make better decisions.

The SEO Metrics That Tell You Whether Your Strategy Is Working

Your SEO strategy is working when organic traffic grows, keyword rankings improve, and visitors take action on your site. To measure that, here are four areas worth checking regularly.

Organic Traffic Shows Your Visibility Is Growing

Every visitor who finds your site through unpaid search results counts as organic traffic. It’s one of the simplest ways to tell if your search visibility is moving in the right direction.

However, don’t get too caught up in daily numbers. Weekly and monthly trends are far more helpful since they help you focus on long-term performance instead of day-to-day changes. Because, in most cases, a random dip on a Tuesday rarely means something went wrong. It could be a public holiday, a seasonal shift, or just normal fluctuation.

Keep in Mind: More organic traffic doesn’t always mean more customers. If hundreds of visitors land on your site but none of them matches your ideal client profile, those visits won’t turn into enquiries or sales.

Keyword Rankings Measure Progress

Keyword rankings show where your web pages sit in search engine results for specific keywords. For example, if your law firm ranks third for “commercial solicitor London,” more people are likely to see and click on your listing when they search for that keyword.

You don’t need to monitor hundreds of terms, either. Focus on your most valuable target keywords (the ones your ideal clients actually search for). Sometimes, a small, well-chosen list of 15 to 20 tracked keywords tells you far more than a bloated spreadsheet ever will.

However, remember that rankings naturally change as Google updates its algorithm, so small ups and downs from week to week are normal. What matters most is steady improvement over time, supported by more clicks, enquiries, or conversions from the right audience.

Google Analytics Explains What Visitors Actually Do

Once someone lands on your site, the question is what they do next. Google Analytics answers that by showing you traffic sources, engagement rate, and average engagement time, so you can see what holds attention and what doesn’t.

Even more useful, you can pinpoint which pages drive enquiries or sales. A service page or blog post that consistently leads to contact form submissions could be a sign to create more content on that topic.

On the flip side, this tool also helps you catch pages with declining traffic early. For instance, if a page that used to bring in 200 monthly visits suddenly drops to 50, you’ll spot it while the damage is still limited.

Catching that drop gives you time to refresh the content, update outdated information, and protect your rankings.

Google Search Console (GSC) Reveals How Google Sees Your Website

You might have a brilliant website, but if Google can’t crawl or index it properly, none of that effort shows up in search results. Google Search Console is a free tool that tells you exactly how Google reads your site, so you can fix problems before they affect your rankings.

This is what to keep an eye on inside Search Console:

  • Indexed Pages: If you have 50 pages on your site but only 30 appear in search results, it usually means Google hasn’t indexed the rest. This number confirms how many of your URLs are actually visible.
  • Impressions: Your pages might show up in search engine results hundreds of times without getting a single click. When that happens, the title tag or meta description likely needs a refresh.
  • Crawl Errors: Even a handful of broken links or technical issues can block Google from reading important pages. Fixing these early will keep your site running smoothly in search.
  • Search Queries: You might be surprised by the actual terms people type before they reach your site. For example, an SEO agency may find visitors searching for “why isn’t my website showing on Google” rather than “SEO audit.” These queries can reveal topics you never thought to target.
  • Click-Through Rate (CTR): A high impression count paired with a low CTR is a clear sign that people see your page but aren’t convinced enough to visit. In such cases, adding relevant schema markup or improving your URL can often make your listing more appealing in search results.

You can also use Search Console to spot keyword opportunities you haven’t gone after yet. If a page sits on page two for a given keyword, a few content tweaks might push it onto page one. At the same time, you can find underperforming pages and fix them before they drag down your wider SEO campaign.

How to Monitor Your Website’s Technical Health

A technically healthy website makes it easy for Google to crawl, index, and rank your pages. When something breaks behind the scenes, though, your content won’t reach the people searching for it, even if the writing itself is excellent.

These are the areas that need regular attention.

Core Web Vitals

Core Web Vitals are a set of performance metrics Google uses to evaluate your website’s user experience. It looks at three things here:

  • How fast your page loads
  • How quickly users can interact with it
  • Whether the layout jumps around during loading

Poor scores in any of these can hurt your rankings and frustrate visitors at the same time. You can check yours for free inside GSC, which makes this an easy place to start. We’ll dig deeper into the CWV in the next few sections.

Loading Speed

Research from Google shows that 53% of mobile users leave a page if it takes longer than three seconds to load. Slow pages can also hurt your search rankings since they create a poorer user experience (which Google takes into account). That’s why you should test your site’s performance regularly.

Visual Stability

You’ve probably been on a page where the text and buttons move around as everything loads. When that happens, visitors are more likely to click the wrong thing or leave the page out of frustration. Google tracks this through a metric called Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS), and a stable layout creates a better user experience while lowering your bounce rate.

Mobile Usability

Over half of all web traffic comes from mobile devices now, which means your site has to work well on smaller screens. If it doesn’t look right on a phone, once again, both visitors and Google will notice. In fact, Google ranks sites partly based on their mobile experience, so this isn’t something you can afford to skip.

Crawl Errors and Indexed Pages

Crawl errors happen when Google tries to access a page on your site but can’t. This often happens due to broken links, missing pages, or server issues. If Google can’t crawl a page, it usually can’t index it either. And if a page isn’t indexed, it won’t appear in search results.

We recommend checking your crawl data each month to help you find and fix these problems before they affect more of your website.

Internal Links

Internal links connect your pages and help Google understand how your site fits together. Without them, a page becomes hard for both Google and visitors to find. Reviewing these connections regularly also spreads ranking strength across your whole site (which benefits your SEO campaign overall).

Usually, a monthly technical review is enough for most businesses. It stops small issues from becoming major SEO problems down the line. And when Google rolls out an algorithm update, a technically sound site is far less likely to lose ground.

Make Better Business Decisions With SEO Reports

You don’t need to track every number out there. The metrics that count are the ones we’ve covered here:

  • Organic traffic
  • Keyword rankings
  • Website analytics
  • Technical health

These tell you whether your SEO efforts are attracting the right visitors and generating leads.

Just as importantly,, check your reports monthly. Because, as we mentioned, daily check-ins often lead to panic over normal fluctuations that usually mean nothing. Monthly reviews, on the other hand, help you catch trends before they snowball into major problems.

And remember, better positions on Google search aren’t the finish line. After all, rankings only count when they bring in more enquiries, leads, and revenue. Your SEO reporting should always tie search performance back to tangible business outcomes.

If your current reports feel like a wall of numbers with no clear direction, we can help. Matter Solutions builds SEO reporting around the metrics that can move your business forward. Get in touch for a free strategy call.
